Because of the high hardness of the bearing steel after heat treatment ,many cutting tools such as carbide cutting tools ,ceramic cutting tools and traditional cbn cutting tools can not performance well on hard turning bearing steel .Even though ceramic cutting tools and traditional cbn cutting tools can be used for finishing process, they also can not used for interrupted turning and large working allowance machining .

Because the characters of the bearing steel part will be easily change, we will have different insert grade specific to different working allowance for turning large bearing steel after heat treatment .

Wind Power bearings,also named slewing bearing. Because of the bad environment and the high processing costs ,the manufacturers usually use the 42CrMo with excellent performance for the main materials, it also be called 42CrMo bearings.

Wind Power Bearing belongs to forging moulding. In order to improve the lifetime of the wind power bearings,the manufacturers usually use heat treatment process to improve the usage performance after rough machining.The hardness of the wind power bearing after heat treatment usually is above HRC45.

Compared with Ceramic insert ,The lifetime of the insert will be 7 times of ceramic insert when the same cutting speed is higher than ceramic insert .And the surface roughness is higher than ceramic insert .

Compared with Ceramic insert ,The lifetime of the insert will be 7 times of ceramic insert when the same cutting speed is higher than cermet insert .And the surface roughness is higher than cermet insert .

When hard turning the wind power bearing with working allowance above 2mm,the bearings manufacturer will choose Halnn Superhard BN-S20 CBN inserts ,When machining the channel part of the wind power bearing ,we can choose CNC Lathe for rough machining speed Vc=100~150m/min,the cutting speed ap=1~4mm, finish turning speed Vc=140~180m/min ,and the roughness can arrive Ra0.4.

The technology of Machining wind power bearing used CBN Cutting Tools


Bearing, as one of the most important part in machine machinist ,is the core components of the wind power machinery. Bearing is the weak part in the wind power machinery. Because of its harsh environment of wind power bearing ,installation and maintenance is not convenient ,so it will required more strictly on the quality of the wind power bearing materials and the processing lifetime. So in order to get better performance ,we make unremitting efforts,  select more suitable wind power materials, materials quality control and the processing technology of propose measures. Thus it not only has enough strength and load capacity, but also has a good service life, safe ,reliable, smooth running and lubrication, corrosion and good sealing performance.

At the beginning, the wind power bearing will make heat treatment after roughing, the hardness is too high to difficult to process, we often use grinding process as the final process. But with the continuous development of modern cutting tools industry, we developed new cutting tools which can be used turning Instead of grinding, it not only improve the processing efficiency, but also reduce the processing costs. In current times, the wind power bearing processing technology will be as follows:

Bearing raw materials-Roughing-Heat treatment-Finishing-Inspection-Antirust-Storage (or assembly of finished products). 

Following we will analysis  the wind power bearing processing technology.

Raw Materials of Bearing Steel ,Forging : Wind power bearing usually use 42CrMo4 as the main materials of the wind power, and it will be forming with forged technology, we should control the forging temperature, so that the particle will not too big .

Rough Machining: Machining the wind power bearing which made through forged process, because the large working allowance, we need to choose the most suitable cutting tools materials. We can choose carbide insert . If the work piece hardness is above HRC45,we can choose CBN Cutting tools ,especially Halnn BN-S20 CBN insert ,the cutting depth can arrive 7.5mm,Then leave some processing allowance for the finishing process.

Heat-treatment(Quenching and Tempering):It need heat treating on the wind power bearing after roughing process, we need improve the hardness of the work piece, wear resistance and impact resistance ,and obtain the good usage lifetime.  Quenching is to improve the hardness of the work piece, wear resistance and impact resistance. Tempering is to eliminate the stress produced when the steel pieces in the quenching process to improve the high hardness of the steel work piece and wear resistance, and the required plasticity and toughness.

When the wind power bearing wall thickness is not more than 12mm, the hardness after quenching will be above HRC63 (Rockwell hardness), hardness after tempering will between HRC 60-65. The hardness of work piece after tempering will be different according to customer requirements. The hardness value depending on the tempering hardness with normal quenching process.

Finishing Process: We make finishing process on the work piece which after heat treatment to obtain the dimension and the procession which the drawing required. At the beginning ,we use grinding process ,grinding can get high precision ,but the working efficiency are low ,and some bearing required not higher on the precision. With the development of modern technology, the requirements for the accuracy of Ra 0.8 ,the cbn cutting tools can meet the requirements.

At present, The cutting tools in the market include carbide insert ,ceramic insert and cubic boron nitride cutting tools. The hardness of the work piece usually is above HRC45 because it is through the lasering process after heat treatment . So we will not recommend that using carbide cutting tools ,ceramic insert can use finishing process, but it can not use interrupted turning process ,and it will easily chipping when meet the Inhomogeneous dimension surface .
